In 1882 - just three years after Thomas Edison discovered the first practical electric lamp for lighting - the world's first hydroelectric power plant for commercial service was launched in Appleton (Wisconsin, United States). This plant, which was only able to power 250 incandescent lamps, was the first technological step to be able to use water as a source of electrical energy.
